28d Lamp

This low-voltage fixture is designed to be placed on a surface, such as a table, shelf or floor. 28d consists of a single sphere wired to a flexible grey crochet memory cable.

28 results from an innovative fabrication process that manipulates both the temperature and the direction of air flow into blown glass. 28 is formed by creating a conventional glass-blown sphere and allowing it to cool, then using a blowtorch to create a hot patch on the circumference. A different colour of super-hot glass is dropped into the heated exterior patch and air is pulled out of the piece – creating a vacuum inside the original sphere, to which only the very hot, recently introduced glass can respond in a controlled implosion. The result is a slightly distorted sphere with an interior landscape of satellite shapes, including an opaque milk glass diffuser that houses a 20-watt xenon lamp.
